Variety of pipeline valves in the UKSPAR catalog

Valves are fittings that are used to stop the movement of the work stream. The design provides for a locking element that blocks the moving medium or resumes its movement, depending on the position. The valve is pressed against the seat, which guarantees no leakage and system stability without water hammer.

The scope of valves is extensive - from public water and gas pipelines to industrial pipes with a large diameter and aggressive working environments. The locking element is driven by the mechanical force of the user or by an electric, pneumatic, hydraulic drive. The maximum working pressure reaches an average of 30 MPa, the working temperature is up to 400-425 C.

The pipeline valve has a number of advantages:

  • small building length;
  • low hydraulic resistance;
  • variability of the place of operation;
  • simple assembly and disassembly;
  • simple design and high maintainability.

  • Sliding valve: classification

    You can classify valves according to the following parameters:

  • shut-off body design;
  • types of actuators for gate valves;
  • type of stem movement;
  • body materials;
  • work environment;
  • attach type.

  • Design of the locking body

    The shutter in the valve can be made in the form of a wedge, a knife or a hose.

    1. The wedge gate valve is the most common. The sharp wedge is pressed tightly against the seat at a sharp angle by the action of a rotating handwheel that drives the spindle and lowers the locking mechanism. The wedge can be pure metal or coated with rubber, which protects the product from corrosion and premature wear. Also, the shutter can be rigid, elastic or double-disk.
    2. Knife gate valves are chosen for their low price and rare breakdowns. The design here is the simplest: a knife-shaped shutter descends perpendicular to the flow, and does not completely stop it, but cuts it, as it were. Such fittings are relevant for sewers, slurry pipelines and other highways with thick, dense working environments.
    3. Pinch valves are the rarest type. The design has a rubber hose through which the working medium flows. The flow is stopped by pressing on the hose section. Such fittings are placed on narrow pipelines through which a stream with solid particles (for example, sludge) moves.

    Types of valve actuators

    Domestic valves are usually operated manually. For industrial purposes, industrial pipelines are made fittings with:

  • reducer;
  • electrically driven;
  • pneumatically driven.

  • The gearbox requires more human intervention in the workflow, but it costs less. The pipeline valve with electric or pneumatic actuator saves time and manpower, and can be controlled remotely.

    Stem movement type

    A distinction is made between rising and non-rising stem valves. In the first case, the spindle is located inside the housing, due to which it does not come into contact with the working environment and is able to last for many years without the formation of rust and plaque. The disadvantage of such products is the heaviness and overall dimensions. Valves with a non-rising spindle are lighter and more accessible, but are only suitable for operation in lines with a neutral working environment.

    Body Materials

    For the production of valves, brass, cast iron and steel are used.

  • brass products are the least common, they are not designed for high temperatures and pressures, and are mainly used on domestic highways;
  • cast iron gate valves are inexpensive, have a simple design and variability of application, but do not like sharp mechanical impacts;
  • steel gate valves are the most durable, reliable, wear-resistant, capable of contact with aggressive working environments, but also the most expensive.

  • Workspace

    Scope of valves is almost unlimited. Possible working environments include:

  • ammonia;
  • cold and hot water;
  • air;
  • gas;
  • sewage;
  • sewerage;
  • oil;
  • oil products;
  • oil;
  • cold and hot steam;
  • natural gas;
  • mildly aggressive environments;
  • wastewater;
  • bulk solids.

  • The most common are water valve, sewer valve, steam valve.

    Join type

    The valve can be mounted in three ways:

  • between piping system flanges;
  • through the internal thread of the line;
  • through your own flange.

  • The type of connection does not affect the performance of the valve.
