It takes up little space and is easily automated, but it does not replace a gate valve in every system.

What is a disc shutter and why is it needed?

A butterfly valve is a shut-off or shut-off-control pipeline valve. A round disk inside the housing rotates around an axis and blocks the passage. The name butterfly valve arose due to the similarity of the disk to the wings of a butterfly. Hence the names "butterfly valve" and "butterfly valve".

The main purpose of the device is to cut off the flow of liquid or gas. Some models regulate the flow rate, but this must be specified by the manufacturer. Long-term operation with a nearly closed disc can cause noise, vibration, cavitation and wear of the seal. For throttling, the valve is selected according to the design characteristic, not just the diameter.

The principle of operation of the butterfly shutter

The shaft connects the disc to the handle, gearbox or actuator. The drive rotates it, and the valve changes position: in the open state, the disc is located parallel to the flow, and in the closed state - across the pipe. The stroke is 90°, so the valve belongs to the quarter-turn type.

During closing, the edge of the disc is pressed against the seat. In concentric models, the shaft axis passes through the center of the disc. In double and triple eccentric designs, the axes are offset, which reduces friction over a large part of the stroke. The tightness class and permissible flow direction are checked in the product data sheet.

Construction: disc, shaft, seal, housing

The housing holds the operating elements and connects to the pipeline. The disc interacts with the flow, the shaft or stem transmits torque from the actuator, the seat seals the passage, and the shaft seal prevents leakage to the outside.

Common connection options:

interflange - clamped between two flanges;

the eyelet has threaded eyes for fastening and, in models provided by the manufacturer, allows you to disconnect one section of the pipe;

with its own connecting flanges.

Disc and housing materials

The most common body is made of cast iron with an anti-corrosion coating. In industry, carbon and stainless steel, special alloys or plastics are used. The disc can be cast iron with a polymer or nickel coating, stainless or bronze. Brass is more often found in small-diameter fittings and individual parts.

The materials of the body, disc, shaft and seal must be compatible with the medium. Impurities, temperature, flow rate and abrasiveness are taken into account.

Types of seals and seats

The elastomeric seat seals the disc and can isolate the body from the operating environment. EPDM (ethylene propylene diene rubber) is often used for water and coolants, NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) for certain lubricants and petroleum products. FKM (fluororubber) is chosen for increased chemical and temperature resistance. PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene, or fluoroplastic) is compatible with many aggressive media, and a metal seat is used at high operating temperatures.

The final choice is made according to the manufacturer's chemical resistance table: the behavior of the material depends on the composition of the medium, temperature, and pressure.

Disc shutter or latch: what's the difference?

A butterfly valve and a gate valve perform the same function - they block the flow in a pipeline, but they do it differently. In a butterfly valve, the disc rotates inside the passage, while in a wedge valve the gate moves perpendicular to the flow and, after opening, leaves the passage section. A gate valve is appropriate where maximum free passage is required, and a butterfly valve is appropriate where compactness, low weight and the possibility of automation are the priority.

Dimensions and installation length

Inter-flange disc rotary valves have a short body and require less space along the pipe. They are convenient in heating stations, pumping stations and densely arranged nodes. The gate is more massive, but its full passage is an advantage for cleaning the pipeline and some contaminated environments.

Before installation, check the standard and pressure of the flanges, the construction length and the diameter of the disc. When turning, it must not touch the pipe or lining. The valve cannot be used as a support for the pipeline.

Flow overlap speed

The lever rotates the disc a quarter turn, while the gate valve requires multiple turns of the handwheel. The butterfly valve is more convenient for quick or frequent shutoff. However, abrupt closing of the water main can cause water hammer, so the speed is limited by a gearbox or drive setting.

Pressure loss at the gate

The open disc remains in the flow and creates local resistance. In a full-port valve, the wedge extends out of the channel, so losses are usually lower. The actual difference depends on the geometry, DN, velocity and Kv or Cv coefficient. The data from the product data sheet is included in the hydraulic calculation.

Types of actuators: lever, handwheel, gearbox, pneumatic actuator

A hand lever is a simple solution for small diameters and moderate torque. It allows you to immediately see the approximate position of the disc. For larger DNs, a worm gear with a handwheel is used: it reduces the required force, fixes the position and makes the closing more controlled.

A pneumatic actuator is suitable for remote control and automated cycles. The actuator can be double-acting or spring-return to the «open» or «closed» position. An electric actuator is convenient without a compressed air system. The actuator size is selected based on the maximum torque with a recommended margin, not just the diameter.

Where is a disc shutter used?

Such fittings are installed in places:

drinking and technical water networks;

heating and cooling systems;

at pumping stations;

in wastewater treatment plants;

in irrigation, ventilation, firefighting and industry.

Special materials and certificates are required for chemical environments, food products, steam or gases.

A butterfly valve is not always suitable for abrasive suspensions, fibrous masses or crystallizing media: inclusions can accumulate on the disc. Here, a knife gate or full-bore gate valve is sometimes more appropriate.

How to choose a disc shutter for a specific task

First, the medium, its concentration, temperature, working and test pressure are determined. Then, DN, nominal pressure PN, required tightness, permissible pressure losses and valve function are specified - only cut-off or also regulation. After that, the materials of the body, disc, shaft and seat, as well as the type of connection are selected.

The PN designation cannot be considered separately from the temperature: with increasing temperature, the permissible operating pressure of a particular design may decrease. Also, the valve should not be selected «with a margin» only by the body size. Too large a DN during adjustment will force the disc to constantly operate at a small opening angle, where flow control is worse.

Additionally, cycle frequency, available space, closing method and time, position signaling are taken into account. For automation, actuator connection, required torque, power supply or air parameters are checked. Industry certification, seat replacement and service are also important.

Before ordering, you should check the full specification. A properly selected butterfly valve is better than a gate valve when compactness, short installation length, fast control and simple automation are priorities. If the main thing is free passage and minimal pressure drop in the open state, the advantage often remains with the gate valve.
