It is inconvenient to open a valve in a well or behind technological equipment manually. For remote control, a ball valve with an electric drive or a pneumatic version is used. Both rotate the ball, but require different power supply and behave differently when it is lost.

Ball valve with actuator: purpose and principle of operation

Inside the two-way valve there is a ball with a through hole. Turning it approximately 90° opens or closes the passage. The actuator transmits the force to the stem and executes the automation command. The manual gear drive facilitates rotation, but does not automate the switching itself.

The shut-off assembly operates primarily in the "open" and "closed" positions. To regulate the flow rate, a suitable valve design and an appropriate actuator are required. The ability to stop the ball halfway does not yet confirm the admissibility of such a mode.

Electric ball valve: features and advantages

The electric motor rotates the output shaft through a gearbox. Limit switches or sensors determine the extreme positions. Voltage and signals are checked according to the passport: outwardly similar units may have different connections.

At a facility with electricity electric ball valve allows you to do without an air network. If the signals are compatible, it is connected to a controller or a leak sensor. Manual control via the provided backup helps during maintenance.

Before purchasing an electric ball valve, check the full stroke time and frequency of starts. Too frequent starts can overheat the motor if the load exceeds its permissible duty cycle.

In the event of a power failure, a conventional actuator can remain in its current position. For emergency operation, a special version is required: with spring return or a backup energy source. The required action is specified in the specification and verified by testing.

Ball valve with pneumatic actuator: features and advantages

Compressed air acts on a piston or other working mechanism that turns the shaft. In a double-acting actuator, the air provides movement in both directions. In a spring-loaded version, one of the strokes is performed by a spring. A distributor is usually required to control the air supply, and appropriate sensors are required to signal the position.

If an electrically operated ball valve requires a power supply check, the pneumatic unit is checked for pressure and air flow. Losses in a long line and simultaneous operation of consumers can degrade these parameters directly near the actuator.

In production pneumatically operated ball valve considered in the presence of prepared air. Filtration and drying are required according to the instructions. Spring return can provide both closing and opening depending on the set safe position.

Electric or pneumatic actuator: which option to choose?

Compare the assembly with the power supply and maintenance. For a single point, an electrically operated ball valve is often more convenient than building an air network. On a pneumatically equipped line, another choice may be more practical.

Application of ball valves with actuator

In water supply, an electrically operated ball valve can shut off the supply at the command of a controller or an emergency sensor. In heating, an automated unit cuts off the circuit if its materials and seals match the temperature of the coolant. To regulate the process, it is checked whether the specific fittings allow this.

In industry, actuators switch process lines and shut down equipment before maintenance. In food production, they check materials, cleanability, and documents.

How to choose a ball valve with a drive

Select the valve and actuator as a set. First, check the operating conditions of the valve, then the capabilities of the mechanism and its compatibility with the facility's automation.

Working environment and pipeline parameters

First, the composition of the medium, its temperature, operating pressure and possible drop across the closed valve are determined. After that, the electric ball valve is checked for the material of the body, ball and seals. For liquids with solid inclusions, the usual design may be unsuitable even with the correct DN.

The following are also verified:

  • connection type;
  • construction length;
  • pass.

Nearby, they leave access for dismantling and a manual backup. After installation close to the wall, fixing this little thing can be expensive.

Drive type and required torque

To turn the ball, a moment is required, which depends on the design, seals and pressure drop. The shear forces and the entire working stroke are checked. Therefore, the ball valve with the electric drive is selected as a matched pair, with the manufacturer's recommended stock and limitations for the stem.

For pneumatics, the torque is checked at the minimum available air pressure, in the spring model both strokes are taken into account. The mounting flange and adapter must be suitable for the load.

Control and connection method

Determine in advance whether only opening and closing commands are required, or whether a position signal, intermediate positioning and communication with the control room are also required. When ordering a ball valve with an electric drive, specify the supply voltage, type of commands and desired behavior in the event of signal loss. This will help you get the right package without modifying the automation cabinet.

For pneumatics, the distributor, coil power supply and position sensors are coordinated. Industrial automation must be compatible with the kit. The «close» command and the «closed» confirmation perform different tasks. The second allows you to detect an incomplete stroke.

Installation and connection of a ball valve with a drive

Installation is performed in a decommissioned area with pressure released and power sources disconnected. The pipes are secured so that their weight and skew do not load the housing. The drive is not used as a handle for tightening threads or carrying the entire assembly.

Before starting up, the ball valve with an electric drive is checked for correct connection, direction of rotation and operation of the end positions. For pneumatics, the tightness of the air connections is additionally checked. The test switching is carried out according to the instructions, and the closing time is coordinated with the pipeline mode: too sharp flow shutdown can cause water hammer.

After commissioning, an emergency scenario and feedback are tested. For selection in UKSPAR, provide the manager with the parameters of the medium, DN, pressure, power supply and control algorithm. This will help to coordinate the valve, drive and automation even before installation.
