How to choose a worm gear reducer for your fittings
The output torque of the gearbox must exceed the maximum control torque of the valve with the manufacturer's recommended margin. At the same time, it must not overload the stem and body. For selection, type, model, DN, PN, torque, rotation angle, mounting position and environmental conditions are required.
It is also important to know:
- top flange dimensions and connection standard;
- shape and size of the stem landing;
- input and required output torque;
- travel angle, end stops and closing direction;
- temperature, corrosion and the required IP protection level.
If a worm gear is needed for a gate valve, the kinematics are first checked: a classic gate valve is multi-turn, while models for a gate or tap usually operate at 90°. A different type of gear or drive may be required for multi-turn valves.
The working principle of worm gearboxes and their design
A worm on the input shaft rotates a gear connected to the output hub. A high gear ratio reduces speed and increases available torque. The housing holds the shafts and lubricant, end stops set the end positions, and an indicator shows "open/closed.".
Shock loads, incorrect stops, and excessive force reduce the life of the mechanism and fittings.
Gear ratio and torque
The gear ratio shows the ratio of input and output speeds: a higher value makes the movement easier, but increases the number of revolutions of the flywheel. AUMA separately standardizes torque ranges, gear ratios, rotation angles and ISO 5211 connections for industrial worm gearboxes. This confirms the main rule: the gearbox is selected based on the interface and torque calculation.
For a gate, the peak seal breakaway moment is taken into account; for a valve, the moment of ball release after idle time and the characteristics of the environment are taken into account. The stock is agreed with the manufacturer to avoid either a weak drive or a mechanical ram.
Compatibility with valves and taps
The worm gear for valve and gate valve is usually a quarter-turn angular mechanism. It must match the valve in terms of mounting flange, shaft fit, angle and torque. ISO 5211 specifies the interface dimensions and reference torque values for connecting rotary actuators.
An adapter sleeve or bracket is only permissible as a calculated mounting part. Backlash, misalignment or weak mounting impairs positioning and creates additional stress on the rod.
Manufacturing materials and IP protection level
The housings are made of cast iron, aluminum alloys or steel, and the gear elements are made of materials designed for contact loads. Coatings protect against corrosion, seals retain lubricant and limit the ingress of dust and water. The IP code classifies the protection of the housing against solid particles and liquids. It does not describe chemical resistance or the possibility of immersion outside the test conditions.
For an open area or well, IP, coating, sealing, and temperature range are checked separately.
