A variety of solenoid valves in the UKSPAR catalogue
Solenoid valve (aka solenoid valve) is used to control the movement of the working medium through the pipe. The design provides a plunger that rises or falls, opening or blocking the flow, respectively. The locking mechanism is moved by an electromagnet, which explains the name of the valve. An electric pulse creates a magnetic field that causes the plunger to move. Solenoid valves are installed on pipelines with a liquid or gaseous medium, and allow you to control the flow remotely.Solenoid valves are used in water supply, heating, pneumatics, compressor equipment, gas and industrial pipelines.
Types of solenoid valves
Solenoid valves differ in design, operating principle, connection type, operating medium, and housing material.
The main types of solenoid valves are classified according to the following parameters:
- construction type;
- principle of action;
- body material;
- working substances;
- coil operating voltage;
- connection type;
- type of sealing membrane.
Normally closed and normally open valves
The most popular are normally closed solenoid valves (NC), which open only when voltage is applied.
There are normally-closed (NO) and normally-open (NO) valves.
- Normally closed products are characterized by a closed closing element in the absence of voltage. When there is a voltage, the shutter rises.
- A normally open valve works the other way around. In the absence of voltage, the closing element opens the flow, when voltage appears, it closes.
Separately, there are bistable valves, in which the operating position of the valve is switched.
Direct and indirect acting solenoid valves
Valves can be of direct and indirect action:
- in direct action products, the shutter moves when voltage is applied;
- in products of indirect action, the shutter moves under the influence of the energy of the working flow.
Direct-acting valves are used in systems with low or zero pressure drop, while indirect-acting valves are used in pipelines with stable operating pressure.
Coil operating voltage
Solenoid valves can be equipped with 12V, 24V, 220V and 380V coils depending on the type of equipment and operating conditions.
The most common solenoid valve on sale is a 220V solenoid valve, which is suitable for most mains. You can also find a 24V solenoid valve
Solenoid valve body materials
Most often, brass and cast iron are used for the production of valves.
- Brass products are light, corrosion resistant and easy to process, practical and inexpensive. They are not designed for high temperatures and pressures, so they are more often used in household pipelines, in water supply, heating and transportation systems of non-aggressive media.
- Cast iron fittings are heavy, very strong, resistant to corrosion, mechanical stress and hydraulic shock, water hammer. It is chosen for industrial and production pipeline systems.
Working environments of solenoid valves
Solenoid valves are used in domestic, commercial and industrial piping systems. Among the most popular options:
- electromagnetic valve for water;
- solenoid valve for steam;
- electromagnetic valve for air;
- electromagnetic valve for oil products;
- electromagnetic valve for non-aggressive environments;
- solenoid valve for oil.
Solenoid valves can be used in both domestic and industrial systems for transporting liquids and gases.
Pipeline connection type
The most common are threaded and flanged solenoid valves.
The fittings are mounted on the pipeline through their own flanges or threads. The type of connection does not affect the technical characteristics.
Types of membranes and seals
- FKM (Viton) - membrane for oils, fuels, petroleum products and chemical media;
- NBR — membrane for petroleum, petroleum products, oil, diesel;
- EPDM is a membrane for alkalis, acids, mildly aggressive environments.
The correct choice of membrane material affects the valve's service life and resistance to the operating environment.
