How to choose a flanged gate valve
The choice starts with the operating pressure and environment:
- a rubberized EPDM wedge is suitable for cold water in municipal networks;
- For petroleum products or other specific liquids, NBR seals are chosen.
Body material:
- cast iron for standard water supply and sewage networks;
- steel with stainless steel wedge overlay for industrial pipelines.
The diameter of the valve must match the diameter of the pipeline without any narrowing of the cross section.
Design and principle of operation
The device's operation is based on the principle of moving the shut-off element perpendicular to the direction of the working fluid flow. The main elements of the design are:
- sturdy body;
- cover;
- spindle (shaft);
- locking element – wedge.
The principle of operation is to move the closing element (wedge or disc) perpendicular to the flow of the working medium. The rotation of the flywheel transmits force to the spindle, which moves the wedge up (opening) or down (closing), tightly pressing it against the sealing surfaces of the housing.
Gate valves, unlike taps, are not designed to regulate flow. They can only be in two states: fully open or fully closed. Due to their full-flow design, gate valves create minimal hydraulic resistance.
Wedge materials and coatings
UKSPAR uses two main types of metals to produce housings:
- Cast iron (gray or high-strength). A traditional material for the utility sector, characterized by durability and wear resistance.
- Steel (carbon or stainless). Used in systems with extreme temperatures and high pressure, where increased plasticity of the metal is required.
Of particular importance is the coating of the locking element. The most popular design is one with a rubberized wedge. A special layer of elastic rubber (EPDM) completely covers the metal base of the wedge. This guarantees class "A" tightness and prevents corrosion inside the locking unit.
Equipment
The basic equipment includes a handwheel for manual opening and closing of the latch.
For remote control, the valve is equipped with an electric drive that rotates the spindle according to a signal from the controller without the physical presence of the operator.

Areas of application
