Threaded condensate drains
How to choose a threaded steam trap by steam pressure
For selection, the pressure in front of the device and the back pressure in the return line are determined. It is the difference between them that ensures the removal of the liquid. The temperature, starting load and the amount of condensate in steady state are also taken into account. The passport throughput is checked for the actual difference, and not just for the largest value in the catalog.
If the sleeve steam trap operates after a heat exchanger with steam supply regulation, the inlet pressure may vary. When it is not enough to overcome the back pressure, gravity drainage stops. This situation is taken into account in the drainage scheme: installing a larger diameter does not eliminate it by itself.
Types of threaded steam traps
Devices differ in the way the valve is controlled. Some respond to the liquid level, others use the peculiarities of the movement of steam and condensate. Thermostatic versions work on the temperature principle. The type of connection does not determine the mechanism of operation, so first choose the principle of operation, and then check the installation dimensions.
Floats
In a float design, the liquid raises a float connected to a discharge valve. As the level decreases, the valve closes. Such a steam trap is able to drain condensate as it forms and operate with variable loads. This is useful for heat exchangers, heaters and process plants where a stable temperature is important.
The position of the housing during installation must ensure correct movement of the float: the device should not be arbitrarily rotated for the sake of ease of strapping.
Thermodynamic
The thermodynamic mechanism uses changes in flow rate and pressure to move the disk. The discharge occurs cyclically. Such products are used, in particular, for draining steam lines. They are selected with a check of the minimum pressure drop and permissible back pressure.
Manufacturing materials
The body, seat, valve and seal work in contact with a hot medium. Their materials are selected according to the temperature, pressure and composition of the condensate. Different grades of cast iron and steel are used for the bodies, and wear-resistant internal parts help maintain tightness during repeated operations.
When choosing a threaded steam trap, check the permissible combination of temperature and pressure for a specific version. Maximum values from different lines of the passport cannot be automatically combined into one operating mode. Gasket material and the possibility of replacing parts during maintenance are also important.
Advantages of threaded (coupling) connection for small diameters
The threaded connection takes up little space and allows for the installation of compact drainage units without welding. For installation, compatible threads and sealing material designed for the pair are required. The detachable connection in the harness facilitates dismantling. The pipes are fixed so that their weight does not load the housing.
A filter is provided in front of the device if necessary, and a shut-off valve allows the unit to be separated for inspection. Maintenance is performed after pressure relief and cooling. The presence of built-in protection against contamination is specified by the design.
Where are threaded steam traps used?
Main installation locations:
- steam pipeline drainage points;
- steam shirts;
- small heat exchangers;
- boiler room equipment.
For each consumer, the need for a separate drainage node and access to it are assessed.
Buy threaded condensate drain with delivery across Ukraine
To buy the right condensate drain without making a mistake in the selection, inform UKSPAR of the pressure before and after the unit, condensate flow rate, temperature and thread size. For replacement, add the marking of the old device and a description of its operation. The manager will clarify availability, offer an affordable version and agree on delivery across Ukraine.
