The non-return valve is used to control the movement of the working medium in the pipes. The fitting allows water (or other medium) to flow in the desired direction and blocks its return. Non-return valves are often installed in the following places:

How the non-return valve works

Check valves operate under the pressure of the moving flow. When the working medium flows in the desired direction, the pressure increases and the valve opens. If the working medium stops flowing, or begins to move in the opposite direction, the through hole is automatically closed by means of a shutter. The non-return valve for water (and other working media) performs a number of functions:

• stabilizes the pressure in the working system;
• minimizes the risk of leaks and hydraulic shocks;
• does not allow the flow to change course, which can lead to violation of the rules of operation of the equipment and even breakdown.

The high-pressure non-return valve prevents leakage of the working flow in case of clogging of the pipeline or its malfunction (example — clogged sewer). It works automatically, without human intervention, and is capable of serving for tens of years if the norms of operation are observed.

1. Flanged Mounted on the pipe through a flange with a seal. It has high strength, is suitable for large pipelines and wells, is more often used in industry.
2. Inter-flange Mounted on the pipe between its flanges. Easy to install and remove, takes up little space, suitable for pipeline systems of small diameter.
3. Coupling (threaded). Mounted on the pipe using a thread (coupling). Compact and neat, usually used in the household.

1. Malleable cast iron. Among the advantages are heat resistance, ease of repair, low price. Among the disadvantages is the risk of rust, heavy weight.
2. Brass. Among the advantages are a stainless surface, a long service life, and low cost. Among the minuses is a small variability of sizes (on average - DU up to 10 cm) and operating temperatures (on average - up to 150-180 °C).
3. Steel. Among the advantages is resistance to different temperature regimes, high loads and pressure drops. Among the disadvantages is the risk of rust.
4. Stainless Steel. Among the advantages are the variability of application, the best indicators of strength and durability. Among the disadvantages is the high price.
